Subject: Re: News Letter / Casualty List

Just got my newsletter as well ; Great job gents. I noted one item: Don't know that this effects the list but on 2/27/71 Masashi Nakashimo was an E-5 Medic. He was a Marine that was assigned to us, thus he must have been a Navy Medic. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions that night, was well as promoted in rank to E-6. I would also like to note that in looking at the MOS's of those on the list Masashi (Shorty as we knew him) is one of only two 91B20 (Medics or Corpsmen ) listed the other being Patrick Weber on 5/22/71. Shorty was on our track and we were on Operation Lam Son 719 when he was killed in action assisting some guys from 2/92 Atry whom had been hit just beside us. Both medics noted were from 1/44th, both from the dates were in the same operation 719 into Laos. I would also like to note that at the time of Shorty's death he had 4 days left in country on his 2nd consecutive tour in country, thus he arrived in Viet Nam in March 1969. Some others of you may recognize him. He was born in Japan just after the war in 1946. He left 2 daughters, wife and family. He felt it his duty to become an American solider. To date I have spoken with his brother and they operate a Japanese restraunt. Both parents passed before I was able to contact them ( a true regret of mine). Both daughters are doing well. It took me some years to find his name and spelling to seek more data. This came from the traveling wall when in visited Tucson.

* On this note of the traveling wall I would like to say thanks to the original wall. I would also like to ask, there are now several walls traveling the country, some doing "shows" at places like the Casino here in Tucson. These guys do this for a fee, they say pays for the travel etc. The wall is not a venture that needs to be made into yet one more commericalized side show. If a wall comes to your town, take a look at who's doing what and follow the money, you may be surprized. Thanks again.
